Weight Loss: Don’t Eat More Than You Can Lift

When I determined that I would write this weight loss article, I figured I wouldn’t turn to “experts”, doctors or classical philosophers. So, I turned to that veritable sage of expert insight and real-life savvy…Miss Piggy. Her “weight loss” counsel? “Never Eat More Than You Can Lift.”

I am not a weight loss therapist. Granted. But, as a Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeon for over three decades, I’ve done my share of weight loss “counseling.”

Actually, by the time they needed to come to see me, my “counseling” was very simple: “If you want to live, you better start some sort of weight loss plan…immediately.”

They usually didn’t like my counsel. I assured them, they would like my surgeon’s knife even less.

It got worse. I would then tell them: “The plain fact is this: If you are overweight, you are in danger.”

People can take only so much comforting.

Why so direct, you ask? Hum…In case you didn’t get it before, I’ll say it again slowly… “If… you… are …overweight, then …YOU… are…IN…DANGER.” That is the first of four principles about weight loss you must learn.

If the conviction in your soul doesn’t have “stopping power” – no “pause” in eating beyond safety – then you are not convinced about the danger sufficiently to save your own life. I know. I’ve seen it a thousand times in the patients of colleagues as well as my own, in hospitals all over Illinois.

Every weight lifter, for example, knows lifting weights, whether for fun, sports training, or competitive advantage, can cause serious injury or death. Every weightlifter knows that the only, really healthy part of the weight-lifting regimen is the part when you rest. That is when the body repairs itself.

If you are overweight, you are almost never resting your body from the weight you are lifting…the weight attached to you.

That is the second point to learn about “weight loss.” If you are overweight, then you are always lifting weight (yours)… and your heart is always working to carry that weight. And your bones, muscles and ligaments are always carrying more then they were designed to lift or carry. And there is little rest for your body. The only solution for you is weight loss…or worse.

Weight loss plan: Take into your body less energy than you use. That’s it. If you use more energy than you take in, your body must burn off the weight to create the energy you need.

Hum…It’s called basic mathematics. Take in less, use up more. Subtract weight. Works every time. No exceptions. But, that’s not the third lesson to learn. No. The Third lesson is this is. Taking into your body less energy than you use is the only solution given to us. No matter what you do, fail in this, no loss of weight will occur.

I’ll just bet you’re having a charismatic experience over that one.

Yet, people would prefer to spend lots of money and exasperation on any of the following:

No. But, there is a Lesson Four here. There is something you should take to protect yourself since you are not going to take the simple weight loss plan given above.

Weight Loss Diary 12

From 18 thru 24 March.

After last week’s set back in my weight loss program this week is great because at my Friday weigh-in I was down to 186 pounds (92 Kilograms) and my waist belt is up one extra notch. Now that has sounded alarm bells because it is the final notch on the belt and I hate making extra holes.

This puts the weight loss program right back on track to achieve a weight of 180 pounds (89 kilos) that was the original target. I did set 17 weeks as the target period but will beat that deadline by around 4 weeks or more at the rate I’m losing weight.

The focus during the past week has been to increase my level of exercise – not by having longer or more vigorous exercise sessions but by being more conscious of doing those little extra things that we all pretend that we don’t have time to do. Like choosing stairs rather than an escalator when the option is available, becoming really serious about questioning whether I need to use the car to do a chore and just getting off my butt and taking a walk after dinner.

One instance that I recall this week was when I promised my wife to bring a carton of milk back when I walked down to buy my morning paper. The sports page was so interesting I totally forgot to buy the milk and arrived back home without milk. – Now I wear the pants in my house with her permission so I immediately turned around and made for the car to return to the village. Then I thought of my promise to increase exercise, so I slipped the car keys into my pocket and walked back to the village. Needless to state I felt proud of myself for pocketing the car keys and remembering my exercise pledge. Maybe that extra trip to the village was worth half a pound in weight loss?

It doesn’t matter whether the exercise helped me lose weight or not, it certainly helped make this old body a little fitter and that is equally as important as losing weight. What’s the point in losing weight if your body remains too unfit to enjoy the benefits of weighing less?

As your body becomes fitter during the process of following this system you should never stop reminding yourself that this extra fitness will be the major factor in keeping the weight off. Because you are fit you will want to be more active and activity burns calories.

Weight Loss Diary 7

Covers days 9 thru 14

The great news is that at my Friday evening weigh-in I have lost 3 pounds (1.35 kilos) and that puts me 50% ahead of my target of losing 1 pound each week. My waist belt is feeling more comfortable as the new ‘one notch tighter’ position that was achieved last week so I am certainly achieving the major goal of measuring less.

The other thing that I’ve discovered is that my exercise sessions are now running for fifteen minutes three times each week rather than the originally recommended ten minute session. This is not due to me pushing harder, it is simply because my body seems to want to take more exercise. I think this extra exercise is a major reason why my weight loss is running ahead of schedule. Exercise should never be forced because some people have health problems that prevent them doing too much. You must discuss any new exercise regime with your doctor before getting involved; that’s just common sense.

It is at this stage of a weight loss program that many people become complacent and for this reason it is a good time to repeat the of the basics of the program. On the day before I started I set the following four goals:

- Each day I will nominate one item of food that will not be eaten that day.

- I will exercise three times each week for a minimum of ten minutes.

- Each day I will incorporate extra activities in my normal routine that will help improve fitness level.

- I will lose one pound (450 grams) each week.

The philosophy behind those four goals is:

- There is no point in nominating dairy products as the food you will avoid on a given day if you don’t consume dairy products, or your consumption is small. It is better to nominate something that you eat regularly. If you nominate potatoes for today then leave a space on your plate where potato would normally be served. This is what abstaining from one food item each day means.

- I exercise Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This is a formal exercise session for a minimum of ten minutes. The target is to raise your pulse rate by 50%.

- Increasing physical activity incorporates using stairs rather than the elevator, parking at the point furthest from the supermarket entrance, constantly asking whether you really need to use the car each time you plan to go out. This is an extension of your formal exercise program and must be used every day.

- Three thousand five hundred calories are equal to one pound (450 grams) of body weight. To lose one pound each week you must use 500 calories less each day. An adult body requires two thousand calories each day to function properly. In the western world the average adult consumes three thousand five hundred calories each day. It isn’t difficult to shed a simple five hundred calories each day. This done by a mixture of healthier eating habits and increased exercise levels. There is nothing more to losing weight.

Weight Loss And The Theory Of Constraints

It’s always been fascinating to me how business, finance and weight loss parallel one another.

Take a personal bank account for instance. If you add more to it than you take out of it, your account will grow bigger and bigger. The same is true with your body. If you put more into it through eating than you take out of it through activity it will grow bigger and bigger. That’s a simple truth isn’t it?

What about a business? If a business owner doesn’t watch his business on a daily basis and take action when necessary his business will most probably fail. The same is true with a weight loss program. If it’s not monitored on a daily basis and action taken when necessary it will fail. Most businesses fail. So do most weight loss programs. That’s a simple truth also.

I’ve been an industrial engineer all my life and years ago I read a book that pertained to manufacturing by Dr. Eliyahu M. Goldratt, an Israeli physicist, entitled “The Theory of Constraints”.

The core idea in the Theory of Constraints is that every real system, such as a profit-making enterprise, must have at least one constraint.

If it were not true, then the system would produce an infinite amount of whatever it strives for. In the case of a profit-making enterprise, it would be infinite profits.

Because a constraint is a factor that limits the system from getting more of whatever it strives for, then a business manager who wants more profits must manage the constraint.

There really is no choice in the matter. Either you manage constraints or they manage you. The constraints will determine the output of the system whether they are acknowledged and managed or not.

There can be many constraints in a business but I found out in my engineering career there is usually a primary one. All constraints must be managed but by focusing the most attention on the primary one, whatever is being strived for will improve. Perfection is never achieved but improvement can be accomplished.

It’s a constant battle.

Does The Theory of Constraints apply to weight loss? Absolutely! If there were no constraints to weight loss then none of us would be fat. Dieters can achieve improvement by focusing on their primary constraint the same as the business manager, even though all constraints must be managed.

So what is the primary constraint to weight loss? I think it’s universal to all dieters. The cartoon character Pogo, by Walt Kelly, said it best. “We have met the enemy and he is us.”

Yep. The primary constraint to weight loss is between our ears. We prefer sitting on the couch and indulging in the pleasures of the moment rather than striving for what we would like to have in the future. As far as weight loss is concerned we might as well be hunting for unicorns or searching for pots of gold at the end of rainbows. We’re just as likely to find them as to lose weight.

Good information on weight loss is abundant but to lose weight you must become proactive. Knowledge is not enough. You’ve got to work on that primary constraint. You’ve got to get off that couch and DO SOMETHING. I wish you the best.

Oolong Tea And Weight Loss

There is so much interest in weight loss and oolong tea (a.k.a. wulong tea) that we are going to look at research supporting the connection.

Let’s start at the beginning

All tea comes from one plant Camellia Sinensis if it doesn’t come from that plant it is not tea (herbs come from a variety of plants). Over time, the plant has protected itself from photosynthetic stressors by forming chemical compounds known as polyphenols. Polyphenols, which include flavonoids, have the same beneficial class of compounds, antioxidants, that make fruits and vegetables good for you.

The difference in green tea and oolong tea is processing. All tea is green when picked. Green tea is heated in order to halt the natural enzymatic reaction (oxidation) of the leaf. Once dried, green tea leaves are then rolled intentionally breaking the cell structure. Oolong tea leaves are plucked, kept under carefully controlled conditions and allowed to oxidize. These leaves are not intentionally broken, leaving most of the cell structure intact. These processing differences make each category of tea beneficially different even though they come from the same plant.

The Weight Loss Connection

The two main ways to reduce food related body weight are; increase energy expenditure (EE) and inhibit the absorption of nutrients, including fat and carbohydrates. Caffeine is a stimulant so it is widely accepted that the caffeine in tea increases metabolism, hence increasing EE. So the question becomes, is it only the caffeine or are other compounds in the tea contributing to that increase?

The Research

The Chinese have long believed that oolong tea is beneficial in reducing and maintaining weight. A Chinese study, in 1998, of 102 females showed that continuous consumption of oolong tea for six weeks resulted in a reduction of body weight. This study, along with the question of other compounds contributing to tea’s weight loss benefits, spurred further research.

In 2001, Physiologist Dr. William Rumpler, of the US Agriculture Research Services’ Diet and Human Laboratory, investigated the ancient Chinese belief that oolong tea is effective in controlling body weight. The study measured how tea influences energy expenditure (EE) and included 12 male volunteers who were given 4 separate beverage formulas over three consecutive days. The beverage formulas consisted of; 1) full strength oolong tea, 2) caffeinated water with caffeine equal to full strength oolong tea, 3) half strength oolong tea and 4) non caffeinated water.

The participants 24 hour EE was measured and resulted in;

- EE levels of about 3% higher when they drank either the full strength oolong tea or the caffeinated water versus the non caffeinated water.

- Participants burned an average of 67 more calories per day when drinking the full strength oolong tea.

- Participants increased fat oxidation (fat burning) by a whooping 12% after consuming the full strength oolong tea versus the caffeinated water.

- This data confirms that a component other than caffeine is responsible for promoting the preferential use of fat as an energy source.

The increase in fat oxidation in this study is amazing! Drinking oolong tea can actually tell your body to burn fat for energy! Scientists then speculated that caffeine combined with EGCGs worked together to increase fat oxidation.

A Japanese study, conducted in 2003, went one step further comparing the benefits of oolong tea and green tea on weight reduction. Eleven healthy young female students participated in this well controlled study. Participants received three different beverage formulas; 1) oolong tea, 2) powdered green tea leaves and 3) water.

Both teas were prepared with boiling water. The oolong tea steeped for five minutes and the powdered green tea leaves were dissolved.

After measurements were taken, the results determined;

- Oolong tea had higher EE levels from beginning to end and at intervals of 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes.

- EE levels peaked at 90 minutes for both oolong and green tea and remained at their respective levels until 120 minutes.

- These results indicate that after consuming oolong tea you will expend more energy then if you were to drink green tea or water and that it can last up to two hours.

The concentrations of caffeine, individual catechins and other polyphenols were also measured producing these interesting findings;

- The caffeine and EGCG content was much higher in the green tea versus the oolong tea.

- The concentration of polymerized polyphenols was significantly higher in the oolong tea versus the green tea.

These findings show that it’s the polymerized polyphenols, highest in oolong tea, that link tea to burning fat, not just the caffeine or just the combination of caffeine and EGCGs. Furthermore, the rest of the compounds compared in the teas were similar or equal to one another with no marked differences, reinforcing the results.

We have shown that oolong tea significantly increases EE for up to as much as 120 minutes and can even promote preferential use of fat as an energy source making it a healthy tool for reducing and maintaining weight. So what about absorption of nutrients?

Oolong tea’s effect on blocking the absorption of fats and carbohydrates is thought to play a key role in its weight reducing benefits. While more studies need to be done, initial studies indicate that oolong tea has absorption blocking potential.

There are proven methods for losing weight and keeping it off; exercise, getting enough sleep and eating a balanced diet. Oolong tea can enhance these positive changes and garner faster results.

Let’s Face It

- Oolong tea is not a quick fix despite the recent advertising claims by slick marketing “professionals.”

-Oolong tea does not have to be expensive to be effective. $39.95 is too much to pay for a 30 day supply of low quality oolong. Remember to get what you pay for.

- These studies do not indicate that oolongs grown in a specific area are better fat burners than other oolongs. It’s the processing that counts.

- Losing 20 lbs in 30 days by adding two cups of oolong tea to your daily routine is nothing more than hype. If this were true, I’d be a size 2.

- If you were dieting, drinking oolong and exercising it would be hard to achieve that much weight loss in 30 days.

- If it sounds too good to be true, then it is to good to be true!

Oolong – The Facts

- Oolong teas taste great and are delicious hot or cold.

- There is a tremendous variety of affordable oolong tea.

- Enjoy a cup of oolong 30 minutes to 1 hour prior to your walk, workout or yoga session and reap the rewards!

- Drink oolong in the afternoon to stave off late day sweet cravings and energy slumps.

- All of these aid in healthy weight loss and maintenance
